Baby passport photo requirements
The photo size is the same as an adult photo, but taking the picture is harder. Follow the tips below, then upload.
| Photo size | 2 x 2 inches, same as an adult |
|---|---|
| Background | Plain white or off-white (a bed sheet works) |
| Who is in the photo | Only the baby. No hands, no other faces, no toys |
| Head size | About 50 to 69% of the photo height |
| Face | Whole face visible, no pacifier, no hat or headband |
| Young infants | Rules are more flexible for babies. Check travel.state.gov for the current wording |
Tips for a photo that gets accepted
- Lay the baby on their back on a plain white sheet and take the picture from straight above.
- Or put the baby in a car seat covered by a white cloth, with no part of the seat visible.
- Use daylight from a window. Avoid flash, which makes red reflections.
- Take many shots. Pick one where the face is straight and sharp.
- If the background removal looks rough, use a smooth sheet without wrinkles.
Rules change. USPhotoTools is not a government site. Confirm the current standard on the official page before you submit.
Questions about this tool
Can a parent hold the baby?
Hands and arms must not be visible. Using a sheet on the floor or a covered seat is easier.
The face was not detected. What do I do?
Drag and zoom the photo until the head sits in the red oval. The checklist updates as you move.
Do babies need their own passport photo?
Yes. Every applicant, including infants, needs a separate photo.
