Tips for a photo that gets accepted

    • Use the same photo you would use for a passport. The visa photo rules match the passport rules.
    • If the DS-160 uploader rejects the file, check that it is a JPEG and under 240 KB. This tool already enforces both.
    • Do not wear a uniform or camouflage clothing.
    • Keep your mouth closed with a neutral expression.

Rules change. USPhotoTools is not a government site. Confirm the current standard on the official page before you submit.

    Questions about this tool

Is the photo compressed to 240 KB?
Yes. Each download is saved as JPEG and the quality is lowered step by step until the file is 240 KB or smaller, which is usually not needed at 600 x 600.
Can I use this for an interview appointment?
Bring your printed photo only if the consulate asks for one. Print with the 4x6 sheet if so.
Does it work on a phone?
Yes. Take a selfie in good light or pick a photo from your gallery.
