Green card photo requirements
USCIS photos follow the same 2x2 inch standard as the State Department. Always read the instructions on your own form too.
| Photo size | 2 x 2 inches, printed on photo paper |
|---|---|
| Head size | 1 to 1 3/8 in from chin to top of hair |
| Background | White to off-white, no shadows |
| Position | Full face, looking at the camera, both ears not required but face fully visible |
| Glasses | Not allowed |
| Age of photo | Recent, taken within 30 days of filing |
| Color, glossy or matte, no filters or retouching |
Tips for a photo that gets accepted
- Print on real photo paper. Plain office paper is often rejected.
- Write your name and A-Number lightly on the back of the photo only if the form instructions ask for it, using a soft pen.
- Do not cut the photo with scissors if you use the print sheet. Use a trimmer for clean 2x2 edges.
Rules change. USPhotoTools is not a government site. Confirm the current standard on the official page before you submit.
Questions about this tool
Is this the same as a passport photo?
The size and head measurements are the same. USCIS may ask for a more recent photo, so check the instructions of your form.
Can I use it for the DV lottery?
The DV lottery uses a digital 600 x 600 to 1200 x 1200 photo with its own rules. Use the visa tool for the file, then check the official DV instructions.
Is my photo stored?
No. It stays in your browser.
