US passport photo requirements
These are the main points of the State Department photo standard. The checklist next to the preview measures the head size and eye line as you adjust.
| Photo size | 2 x 2 inches (51 x 51 mm) |

| Head size | 1 to 1 3/8 in (25 to 35 mm) from chin to top of head, 50 to 69% of photo height |
| Eye line | Between 1 1/8 and 1 3/8 in from the bottom, about 56 to 69% |
| Background | Plain white or off-white, no shadows or patterns |
| Expression | Neutral or natural smile, both eyes open, facing the camera |
| Glasses | Not allowed (medical exception needs a signed doctor statement) |
| Age of photo | Taken within the last 6 months, in color |
Tips for a photo that gets accepted
- Stand 1.5 m (5 ft) from a window or soft light so the face has no shadows.
- Keep the camera at eye level. Do not tilt your head.
- Wear everyday clothes. Avoid white tops, which blend into the background.
- Do not use filters, beauty modes or retouching.
- Pull hair back so the face outline and both eyes are clear.

Questions about this tool
What size is a US passport photo in pixels?
For an online application the photo must be square, between 600 x 600 and 1200 x 1200 pixels. This tool exports 600 x 600 pixels, saved at 300 DPI.
Can I print the photo at a drugstore?
Yes. Download the 4x6 print sheet. It places six 2x2 inch photos on one 4x6 inch print at 300 DPI, with light cut lines.
Why does the checklist show a warning?
The tool measures your head size and eye line live. Use the zoom slider and drag the photo until both values turn green.
